UK economy posts worst annual slump since 1709

The U.K. economy contracted by 9.9% amid the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, CNBC reports.

That's the largest decrease since the Great Frost of 1709, a particularly severe winter.

The United Kingdom's gross domestic product ended the year with 1% growth in the fourth quarter.
