The highest court in the United Kingdom ruled Thursday that Prime Minister Theresa May must seek parliamentary approval before the country can exit the European Union.
The decision is expected to slow, but not halt, the Brexit process.
May immediately vowed to appeal the ruling to the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, which is to hear the appeal in December.
May’s Conservative Party holds only a slim majority in Parliament. Still, according to The New York Times, it's seen as politically toxic to overturn the Brexit referendum outcome.
