Uber settles Calif. suit for up to $25M

Uber agreed to pay the cities of San Francisco and Los Angeles up to $25 million over accusations of misrepresenting its background checks.

The 2014 suit alleged Uber did not thoroughly vet its drivers even though the company claimed its background checks were the "gold standard" in the industry.

As part of the settlement, Uber agreed not to use certain language describing its services, such as the "safest ride on the road."
