Uber, Lyft to halt Austin service after losing vote

Ride-sharing services Uber and Lyft plan plan to halt service in Austin, Texas, indefinitely starting today after losing a crucial ballot measure.

The new rules, including fingerprinting of drivers, make it difficult for the companies to follow their business models, officials with the services said.

"Disappointment does not begin to describe about how we feel about shutting down operations in Austin," said Chris Nakutis, Uber's general manager in AUstin.

Since launching operations in October 2014, Uber says it's signed up 10,000 drivers and 500,000 riders opened its app to request a pickup.
