U-Haul store more than doubling self-storage space

U-Haul’s Springfield store at the intersection of Glenstone Avenue and Commercial Street is expanding.

The Phoenix-based company is more than doubling its climate-controlled self-storage units at the 1768 N. Glenstone Ave. store after purchasing adjacent property along Commercial Street last June.

U-Haul spokeswoman Andrea Batchelor said the company is renovating the 1.28-acre property that sits north of the current facility to add 240 new self-storage units. Currently, the store has 173 self-storage units. The project is slated for completion this summer.

“Most cities are starting to see the advantages of adaptive reuse,” U-Haul’s Missouri President Bryan Dean said in a news release, calling the adjacent property an eyesore. “When we finish our renovations, it will be something that both U-Haul and the city of Springfield can be proud of.”

Jamie Brewster, property manager with SVN Rankin Co. LLC, said the 1824 E. Commercial St. property U-Haul is renovating formerly served as office and storage space. She said the former landlord was the Jerry R. Carter trust, and SVN Rankin served as the listing agent for the sale. Brewster and Batchelor declined to disclose the sales price.

The Commercial Street property has a 2016 taxable appraised value of $373,400, according to the Greene County assessor’s website.

U-Haul’s renovation of the property fits with the company’s corporate sustainability initiatives calling on the reuse of existing buildings, according to the release.

UHaul.com lists 13 storage areas and dealerships in Springfield.
