Twin-tailed mermaid on its way to East Sunshine

The coffee company known for its twin-tailed mermaid logo may soon open on East Sunshine Street.

A Springfield business license filed last week by Seattle-based Starbucks Corp. (Nasdaq: SBUX) indicates a new store is opening at 3230 E. Sunshine St., next to restaurateur Jason Pullman’s Zaxby’s chicken restaurant. Pullman and officials with Starbucks could not be reached for comment by deadline.

Via Z5 Properties LLC, Pullman and business partner Jeff Hebble opened the city’s first Zaxby’s in September at 3220 E. Sunshine St. after buying the 1.7-acre site in April 2015 for $990,000.

In April last year, Pullman, who’s also a local Firehouse Subs franchisee, said construction on the Sunshine Street site comprised a 3,750-square-foot building to house the Zaxby’s franchise and a separate 2,000-square-foot building for a Starbucks. At the time, Pullman said he was in the negotiation process with Starbucks to lease the second building, which has been constructed, but it is not yet occupied.

Starbucks’ website does not list the East Sunshine location near Zaxby’s on its store locator. Pyramid Foods also plans to open a Starbucks inside its upcoming Ruby’s Market on East Sunshine, but the coffee shop’s website does not include that store either. The Starbucks website lists 16 stores in Springfield, including those inside various grocery stores.

Starbucks stores also are planned to open at the Brentwood Center on South Glenstone Avenue and at Branson-based HCW LLC’s 1008 E. Battlefield Road retail center.
