Trump signs order to dismantle Education Department

President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an executive order that seeks to dismantle the U.S. Education Department.

The executive order directs the education secretary to "take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure of the Department of Education and return authority over education to the states and local communities.” Core functions such as Title I funding for low-income schools would continue.

The dismantling of the department may require an act of Congress, according to The Associated Press. The department was created by Congress in 1979.
