President Donald Trump issued a televised plea for border wall funding on Tuesday night.
"This is a choice between right and wrong," he said, referencing what he called a scourge of drugs and violence caused by illegal immigration.
Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Trump "just used the backdrop of the Oval Office to manufacture a crisis, stoke fear and divert attention from the turmoil in his administration."
