Trump directive stalls FAA safety warnings

President Donald Trump's executive directive to restrict or postpone new government regulations for 60 days has created an unintended consequence hurting the Federal Aviation Administration.

The order means FAA instructions called “airworthiness directives” have been stalled. They are used frequently to formalize mandated inspections or modifications to correct unsafe conditions on U.S. aircraft.

Still, the stalled directives do not mean airlines and aircraft operators don’t know about serious problems. The directives typically are the last step in the safety regulatory process. According to two industry officials, the aircraft operators first receive manufacturer bulletins about the problems, but in some instances wait for final FAA notices to act.
