President Donald Trump has denied plans to fire Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell after reportedly telling a room full of Republican lawmakers that he would do so.
"We're not planning on doing it," he said Wednesday at the White House. "I don't rule out anything, but I think it's highly unlikely, unless he has to leave for fraud."
A senior White House official anonymously told members of the media that Trump said he would oust Powell in a Tuesday conversation with a group of House Republicans.
