President Donald Trump is removing Defense Secretary Jim Mattis sooner than he planned to resign.
Mattis previously signaled he would resign at the end of February. Trump on Sunday said Mattis will exit Jan. 1.
Patrick Shanahan, a former Boeing executive, is slated to become acting Defense secretary.
