Tribune Publishing Co. looking to buy newspapers

Posted online
Despite speculation that Tribune Publishing Co. could be looking to sell the Chicago Tribune, the Los Angeles Times and/or other Tribune daily publications, CEO Jack Griffin said he wants to buy more newspapers.

Griffen pointed to the company’s recent $30 million acquisition of two Maryland newspapers – the Annapolis Capital and the Carroll County Times – as evidence of its plans to grow its newspaper group.

On Aug. 4, Tribune Publishing will become an independent company. It has operated under the umbrella of Tribune Media Co. Under Griffen, Tribune Publishing runs eight major papers and 150 niche publications.

It appears poised to buy more print publications near its existing major markets to help attract more national advertisers, according to Crain’s Chicago Business.
