Treasurer’s office returns record funds in year-to-date

Posted online
State Treasurer Sarah Steelman’s office has broken last fiscal year’s record for returned funds, property and resources to Missourians, and four months remain in fiscal 2008.

So far, the office has returned $24.1 million – more than what the office returned in 1985–1996 combined, according to a news release. In fiscal 2007, it returned a record $22.9 million.

Since Steelman took office about three years ago, the office has returned more than $79 million in property.

Some funds from the unreturned property fund are transferred to the state’s general revenue fund, but they can be retrieved if unreturned property claims outpace the abandoned property fund. In the last three years, Steelman’s office has transferred $180 million to the general revenue fund.

Missourians can search for their names on the unclaimed property list by visiting www.showmemoney.com.
