Steelman's office is responsible for unclaimed property turned over to the state from businesses, banks and other entities that have been unable to locate the property’s owner.
Through searches and special programs, such as Operation Extra Mile that is targeted at veterans and their families, Steelman and her team have returned more than $70 million since taking office in 2005.
“This property belongs to the people of this state, and we're working our hardest to get it to them,” said Steelman in a news release, noting that the average payout on returns this year has been approximately $375. “That's real help for families who need it, and we're making every effort to get that help to them.”
