During fiscal 2012, Missouri State Treasurer Clint Zweifel's office returned $38.2 million in unclaimed property to more than 130,000 account owners, according to a news release.

In early June, Zweifel's office broke a state record for returning unclaimed property, with $36.5 million.

“After breaking the record back on June 6, my team used the final three weeks to return more than $1.7 million to 7,000 account owners," Zweifel said in the release.

Since Zweifel took office in 2009, the treasurer has returned $121 million. The treasurer's office still holds roughly $700 million in unclaimed property for 4.3 million account holders.

In southwest Missouri, the office holds $35 million in unclaimed property for more than 399,000 accounts. The region comprises Barry, Barton, Cedar, Christian, Dade, Dallas, Douglas, Greene, Hickory, Howell, Jasper, Laclede, Lawrence, McDonald, Newton, Oregon, Ozark, Polk, Shannon, St. Clair, Stone, Taney, Texas, Vernon, Webster and Wright counties, according to the release.

Unclaimed property can be searched for on the treasurer's Web site.
