Treasurer adds charity option for unclaimed property

Posted online
Missouri Treasurer Client Zweifel's office has added the option for unclaimed property owners to donate directly to charity causes.

Zweifel's office holds more than $810 million in unclaims property belonging to 4.7 million account owners. Those who claim the accounts may now choose to donate their proceeds directly to their choice of 20 charities, which range from those promoting health issue solutions, such as the American Cancer Society, to children's programs, including the Children's Trust Fund, according to a news release.

“These charities provide invaluable services to the people of Missouri and now, with this program, we have created a simple way to give back to citizens in our state,” Zweifel said in the release, noting the charity option was requested by constituents.

The average return on claims is $300. In southwest Missouri, Zweifel's office holds $40.2 million in some 461,000 accounts.

Unclaimed property can be claimed at ShowMeMoney.com.
