Transportation projects posted for public review

Posted online
The public is invited to comment on proposed amendments that could add to or modify transportation projects in the Springfield area during the next three years.

Amendments to the 2006-2008 Transportation Improvement Program are available for review today through Oct. 19. The Ozarks Transportation Organization will collect public comments and present them to the Metropolitan Planning Organization Board of Directors on Oct. 20.

The proposed amendments are:

  • A decrease in the amount of funding from $100,000 to $30,000 for the extension and realignment of Route CC from Main Street to Nicholas Road in Christian County.

  • The addition of cost sharing with the Missouri Department of Transportation to improve Route 14 at Ozarks Technical Community College’s south campus in Christian County. The amendment asks for $709,108 from MODOT's economic development funds.

  • The addition of a project to design and construct new traffic signals at the intersections of Campbell Avenue with McDaniel, Olive and College streets in Springfield, to coincide with streetscape improvements.

The Transportation Improvement Program details about 75 projects scheduled through 2008 in Springfield, Willard, Strafford, Brookline, Republic, Battlefield, Fremont Hills, Nixa and Ozark. A project must be included in the program to be eligible for federal funds.

Also available for review is Phase I of the Congestion Management System, which is intended to create a plan for alleviating traffic congestion. The first phase gives methods for identifying congestion in high-traffic areas and possible solutions to hypothetical situations. Phase II, scheduled for completion in December, will target congestion problems specific to the area.

The amendments and congestion project are available on the third floor of the Busch Municipal Building, 840 Boonville Ave, or online. Comments can be submitted in writing to the Ozarks Transportation Organization, 840 Boonville Ave., Springfield, Mo., 65801.

The public is invited to make further comments about proposed projects when the board meets to take action at noon Oct. 20 on the fourth floor of the Busch Municipal Building.
