Andrej Karpathy, Tesla’s director of artificial intelligence who led the Autopilot vision team, is exiting the company.
Karpathy, who was on a four-month leave of absence, said he would spend more time “revisiting my long-term passions around technical work in AI, open source and education.”
Tesla recently announced it was laying off 229 data annotation employees who are part of the company’s larger Autopilot team. It's also shuttering the San Mateo, California, office where they worked.
