The United Kingdom government is looking into whether video-sharing app TikTok breaches data protection laws of its young users.
In particular, officials are concerned with how the open messaging system allows any adult to message any child.
Earlier this year, Bytedance, the Chinese firm that owns TikTok, was fined a record $5.7 million by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission for illegally collecting personal information from children under 13, the age at which US laws mandate strict data protections. TikTok was previously called Musical.ly.
