This is why Obama is so concerned about the middle class

For decades now, wealthy Americans have gotten a disproportionate share of economic gains while the middle class has watched its wages go over a cliff and continue to plunge. Between 2009 and 2012, the income of the top 1 percent has shot up 31.4 percent, while the rest of Americans saw a paltry 0.4 percent increase, CNNMoney reports.
 
Incomes haven't budged or have fallen backward while the richest 20 percent have seen their wealth double over the past 30 years, according to CNNMoney. The rich control almost 90 percent of the nation's wealth while the share for the middle class has fallen from 18 percent to 12 percent, the report states.
 
Income inequality and the collapse of the middle class are increasingly difficult to ignore. To address the disparity, President Barack Obama and other politicians are looking for ways to even the playing field and give working Americans an income boost. Obama's middle-class agenda includes tax breaks for working Americans.
