The richest generation? Shh...

Posted online
Talk about being in the right place at the right time. Apparently, there's an entire generation of Americans who have managed to quietly amass, over all, the most wealth of any other age demographic before or since, simply because they had the great good fortune of being born between 1928 and 1945.

Older than World War II's Greatest Generation and younger than baby boomers, the Silent Generation was able to avoid the financial difficulties that have beset almost everyone else since the 2007 recession. Rather, they have reversed the historical trend of older people having the highest rate of poverty (35 percent) than any other age group. Now, they have the lowest - only 9.5 percent, according to Bloomberg Businessweek.

While the median household income has fallen drastically for younger people, those over 75 saw their net worth jump by nearly $75,000 between 1989 and 2013. According to Bloomberg Businessweek, this generation's financial comfort is attributable to being born during the "sweet spot" in America's economy, working during the years when the economy was robust, health care improving and social safety nets more generous. They were also able to begin retiring just as the economy was tanking for everyone else.
