Satirical news organization The Onion is halting its print editions in its remaining markets of Chicago, Milwaukee and Providence, R.I., according to the Chicago Tribune. Due to dwindling advertising, the paper has been disappearing from newsstands in recent years.
The company plans to focus on its web and video content, including a television series for Amazon.com Inc. called the Onion News Empire. The Onion is also rolling out a new creative service for advertisers such as shoe retailer DSW Inc.
Last year, the Onion moved its editorial staff from New York to Chicago to consolidate its workforce at the headquarters. The Onion was founded in 1988, and the printed product was available in 17 markets at its peak.
