The Hidden Hut emerges in Marshfield

A pair of business owners have collaborated on a new cafe and gift shop in Marshfield.

The Hidden Hut LLC launched May 10 at 302 S. Pitts St., just off East Jackson Street, one of the town’s main thoroughfares. Shanda Kloster said she and Cathie Davis co-own the venture and estimated they combined to invest around $40,000 in startup costs. The owners say part of the work involved converting the former residential property’s kitchen into one suitable for commercial use. Lease terms with landlord Phil Joyce were not disclosed.

“This concept started in a basement. Shanda and I were playing with resin and having some fun, letting our inner little girls out,” Davis said. “We said we’d really like to open up a clubhouse where people can come and hang out. Sixty days later, it was done.”

The Hidden Hut’s drinks include smoothies, teas, coffee and flavored waters. Chewy tapioca balls called boba pearls are available to add for most drinks, Kloster said. Around 20 smoothie flavors are prepared, such as green apple, pina colada and wild berry. The shop also plans to offer Hawaiian shaved ice beginning this week. Drink prices range $1.75-$7, she said.

Food options with prices ranging $3.50-$5 also are on the menu, including muffins, quiches, scones and steel cut oats. The quiches feature freshly grown microgreens, said Davis, who makes all the baked goods.

The 750-square-foot cafe also has a small gift shop space with products such as shampoo and conditioner bars and bath salts.

Kloster, who is originally from Hawaii and half-Filipino, said The Hidden Hut has a tropical theme, punctuated by the bamboo surrounding the shop’s outdoor dining areas. She said it served as an opportunity for the owners to unite some of their interests, such as boba drinks and baking.

“Owning a small business is not a new field for me,” Kloster said, noting she also is a licensed esthetician with office space in The Shabby Sheep, a Marshfield boutique. “We brought in more of the things that we enjoy.”

Davis said she has been a licensed massage therapist for a year through her Shift Into Balance practice. She offers services five days a week at The Hidden Hut, she said.
