The Atlantic backs Clinton in rare endorsement

The Atlantic rarely endorses candidates. But in a piece dubbed "Against Donald Trump," its editorial board encouraged voters to select his opponent Hillary Clinton.

“We are impressed by many of the qualities of the Democratic Party’s nominee for president, even as we are exasperated by others,” the editorial board said, “but we are mainly concerned with the Republican Party’s nominee, Donald J. Trump, who might be the most ostentatiously unqualified major-party candidate in the 277-year history of the American presidency.”

The Atlantic now has made three endorsements in its 159-year history. In 1964, it endorsed Lyndon B. Johnson over opponent Barry Goldwater. In 1860, the publication endorsed Abraham Lincoln.
