The $1 paper microscope that could change the world

Posted online
It's made of paper, folds small enough to fit in a pocket, is virtually indestructible, can magnify 2,000 times and has the potential to save millions of lives. And it only costs $1 to manufacture.

The Foldscope, a paper microscope developed by biophysicist Manu Prakush, could potentially change the way health care professionals diagnose diseases in remote parts of the world, according to Bloomberg Businessweek.

The Foldscopes aren't yet available commercially but their development is funded by grants from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Ten thousand Foldscopes will be distributed to beta testers.
