A Texas resident filed suit against electricity retailer Griddy Energy for allegedly charging exorbitant prices during the severe winter storm last week.
The $1 billion class-action lawsuit filed by Lisa Khoury alleges she received a bill of more than $9,000 and that the utility company automatically withdrew $1,200 from her bank account. According to the lawsuit, some customers had bills as high as $17,000.
Griddy officials pointed to its electricity bill policy, through which customers' rates are impacted by how much electricity is used and the market price of electricity.
