Tepid tech sector hopes Twitter IPO liked more than Facebook's

As social network Twitter prepares to offer its stock for public consumption, investors are keeping an optimistic eye on the initial public offering and the possibility the stock sale might boost the fledgling technology stocks sector, according to a report in the New York Times.

 
A meager 17 percent of all IPOs in 2013 were tech deals, according to the report, the lowest percentage since 2008. Twitter, which analysts have valued at more than $10 billion and which has the potential to generate millions of dollars with its IPO, is expected to be the largest tech IPO since Facebook stock went public last year.
 
The Facebook IPO, however, was fraught with technical difficulties and an anemic initial showing, and some analysts blame that bungled IPO for the overall downturn in the tech sector, which made up 35 percent of all stock sales in 2011.
