Officials with TelComm Credit Union are expecting to open the financial institution's sixth branch by October in south Springfield.
The branch would be located at 1750 E. Republic Road, the former site of a Git-n-Go convenience store. TelComm purchased the property from Jared Enterprises about a year ago for an undisclosed amount, said TelComm President and CEO Don Ackerman.
Now, after dealing with environmental issues resulting from fuel tank leakage at the former gas station, design plans have been submitted and are pending with the city, Ackerman said, noting the shell of the building has been salvaged and the interior has been gutted.
Hood-Rich Inc. has been selected as architect for the project, and Nabholz Construction Services is the construction manager. Bids for general contractor will be accepted after the design plans are approved, Ackerman said.
He said TelComm chose the Republic Road location after company directors living in the area indicated it had potential.
"We noted we had a lot of members who live in the area, plus there's a lot of potential for new business in that area," Ackerman said. "My two directors who live down there remember when that convenience store was open; it was really busy."
In the December Springfield Business Journal story "
Credit unions report growth," Ackerman said TelComm's membership had grown 5 percent to 15,531 in the last year. According to SBJ's list of the area's largest credit unions, TelComm had 2010 assets of $98.1 million, up from $92.4 million in 2009.
TelComm operates three Springfield branches, as well as one each in Nixa and Republic, according to its
Web site.
