Team to guide prison-to-community transitions

Posted online
Gov. Matt Blunt signed an executive order Sept. 21 establishing a permanent interagency steering team for the Missouri Reentry Process.

The Department of Corrections will lead the interagency initiative to pool resources and address the critical issue of offenders returning to the community after release from prison.

Executive Order 05-33 makes permanent a plan that brings departments together to work toward a common goal, according to a news release from Blunt’s office.

The departments of Corrections, Mental Health, Social Services, Elementary and Secondary Education, Economic Development, Revenue, Health and Senior Services and the Office of State Courts Administrator are all a part of the Missouri Reentry Process.

The team’s mission is to integrate successful offender re-entry principles and practices in state agencies and communities resulting in partnerships that enhance offender self-sufficiency, reduce re-incarceration and improve public safety.

“Of the more than 30,000 felons incarcerated in Missouri’s prisons, 97 percent will eventually be released and return to a Missouri community,” Blunt said in the release.

“To ensure our families’ and communities’ safety, it is crucial that these men and women make a successful transition out of prison, have the tools to live a law-abiding life and do not re-offend.”

The Department of Corrections will appoint a chairperson to head up the Missouri Reentry Process steering team who will be responsible for oversight and direction while the team develops a comprehensive, statewide plan for the initiative.

The team is expected to submit annual reports to the governor that will include outcomes, progress toward goals and emerging issues.
