Greene County residents shoulder a higher tax burden than most other counties statewide, according to a report from financial data tracking firm SmartAsset.

The local county ranked No. 79 on the list, which compiles average income, sales, property and fuel taxes to determine a tax-burden index score. Springfield's score is 74.47. The higher the score, the lower the tax burden.

Like the vast majority of the state, Greene County's income tax is $9,983. Its sales tax is $964, with a property tax of $1,229 and fuel tax of $247, according to the study.

Greene County ranks fourth among the five counties in the Springfield metropolitan statistical area. The counties, listed by ranking and index score, are:
• No. 21 Dallas County, 78.25;
• No. 27 Polk County, 77.52;
• No. 69 Webster County, 75.03;
• No. 79 Greene County, 74.47; and
• No. 94 Christian County, 73.

Comparatively, No. 1 in Missouri Ozark County has a tax-burden index score of 80.85. Income taxes in the county are $9,983, with $909 in sales taxes, $523 in property taxes and $136 in fuel taxes. The highest tax burden in Missouri is in St. Louis County, with an index score of 60.84.

None of the counties in the top 10 are in Springfield Business Journal's coverage area of 50 miles outside of city limits.

On the national level, the lowest tax burden is in Alaska’s Yukon Koyukuk County, which doesn't have a sales tax, according to the report.

Interesting to see that the "burden" of living in Christian County is greater than the "burden" of living in Greene County.
