A tariff rumor that has been denied by the White House briefly lifted markets on Monday.
Reports suggested the Trump administration was considering a pause on tariffs. However, the White House debunked the rumor as “fake news.”
Among stock movement caused by the rumor, the Dow Jones Industrial Average erased a morning loss of 1,700 points, increased by 800 points and then retreated to a loss of 629 points, according to The Associated Press.
