Taco Bell to take on McDonald's breakfast with eggs in waffles

Posted online
Yum! Brands Inc.'s Taco Bell chain will widely introduce breakfast foods on March 27, according to Bloomberg. The menu will include items such as waffle tacos, egg burritos and the bacon A.M. Crunchwrap.

A trial run began in some locations in 2012, offering items such as scrambled egg-stuffed waffles.

The expanded menu will be available in 5,500 of Taco Bell's more than 5,700 restaurants nationwide.

The chain will be directly competing with McDonald's Corp. Bloomberg reports that McDonald's accounts for 31 percent of all fast-food sales in the morning.

"No one has come up with an Egg McMuffin killer," Bob Goldin, executive vice president at Chicago-based research firm Technomic, told Bloomberg. "It's an iconic product; it's hard to compete against."

Revenue from breakfast items at fast-food and fast-casual restaurants has grown 4.8 percent annually from 2007 to 2012, to $31.7 billion.
