T-Mobile and Sprint are actively discussing a merger, people familiar with the situation told CNBC.
The sources said the stock-for-stock merger would result in T-Mobile parent Deutsche Telekom becoming majority owner.
Sprint owner Softbank would emerge as a large minority shareholder through the deal.
