Symposium to focus on employment law

Posted online
Rod Chapel Jr., the director of the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations, will be in Springfield Nov. 16 to talk about labor trends in Missouri.

Chapel is the keynote speaker for Kansas City-based law firm Shughart, Thompson & Kilroy PC’s 2006 Labor, Employment and Benefits Symposium at the Oasis Convention Center.

The firm has a Springfield office at 901 St. Louis St., Ste. 1200, but this is the first time the symposium will be held in the Ozarks.

“This is something that we’ve done in Kansas City, and we’re going to start doing it in Springfield,” said Kathryn Anastasio, the firm’s marketing director. “It’s a biannual event – every other year – and it’s a half-day session where there are 15- to 20-minute sessions to give overviews of the important things going on in the labor arena.”

Topics will include garnishments, noncompete agreements, wage-and-hour issues and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act compliance, she said, with attorneys from STK’s labor and employment law and employee benefits law groups making the presentations.

Anastasio said registration fees are $50 per company to help cover the costs of the event venue. Most companies, she said, will send five to 10 employees, though there are no minimums or maximums with the fee. Included in the cost are continental breakfast, lunch and seminar materials.

Continuing education credits are available for attorneys and human-resources professionals who attend.

In Kansas City, symposium attendance is typically between 150 and 200 people, Anastasio said.

“We’re expecting probably around 100 in Springfield,” she said. “We have RSVPs coming in every day.”

The firm is requesting registration by Nov. 8, but Anastasio said that as long as the symposium has seats available, late registration is possible.
