SW Bell, union agree on new CWA contract

Posted online

A tentative agreement for a new contract between Southwestern Bell and Communications Workers of America has been reached. Both sides announced the agreement April 8.

Communication Workers of America represents about 40,000 Southwestern Bell workers in Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas and Texas, according to a release from Southwestern Bell.

The agreement is for a three-year

contract. The current contract expires

Aug. 8.

Negotiations have progressed rapidly and began early so as to ensure an early agreement, said Southwestern Bell spokesman Tom Pagano.

"I think this early agreement represents cooperation on both sides and an earnestness on the part of both to reach an agreement," Pagano said.

Details of the pending agreement will not be released prior to its ratification.

"Our bargaining team worked hard to secure an agreement that provides higher wages, improved job security and an improved benefits package. We are endorsing its ratification," said Bob Turn, vice president of CWA's District 6.
