Survey: Springfield utility bills rank among lowest

Posted online
The 2008 Utility Bill Comparison survey conducted by Memphis Light, Gas and Water shows Springfield’s residential utility bills on average are the second-lowest among 30 selected cities.

City Utilities of Springfield publicized results of the survey on Wednesday.

Based on rates as of Jan. 1, the report estimates an average Springfield resident pays $297.47 per month for electricity, natural gas, water and wastewater service combined. That’s compared to $284.03 in Omaha, Neb., the city with the lowest average, and $529.54 in New York City, which had the highest average.

The survey did not pinpoint the average overall utility bills for commercial customers, but did offer average costs for specific utility services.

Springfield’s commercial customers pay an average of $6,930 per month for 100,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity, ranking it the third-lowest among 33 cities. Those customers also pay about $520.25 per month for 500 CFF (hundred cubic feet) of gas – the seventh-lowest among 36 cities – and $519.80 per month for 250 CFF of water – the 10th-highest among 27 cities.

Meanwhile, Springfield residents pay an average of $64.10 per month for 1,000 kilowatts of electricity, ranking the city the fourth-lowest on a list of 39. Those customers also pay an average of $206.35 per month for 200 CFF of gas, for the sixth-lowest ranking on the list of 39 cities.
