Survey: Springfield MSA wages average $17.02 per hour

Workers in the Springfield metropolitan statistical area earned an average of $17.02 per hour in May 2010, according to data made available yesterday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Wages in the Springfield MSA were lower than the national average, which was $21.35 in May 2010, according to a news release.

Wage data was determined from the Occupational Employment Statistics survey, a semiannual mail questionnaire sent out to roughly 200,000 establishments in May and November of each year for a three-year period. The recently released estimates are based on May 2010, November 2009, May 2009, November 2008, May 2008 and November 2007.

In the Springfield MSA, the sample was 2,151 establishments with a response rate of 81 percent.

With a response rate of 81 percent, the Springfield MSA's sample came from 2,151 establishment.

The top five occupational earnings in the Springfield area were:
  • management, $38.81 per hour;
  • business and financial operations, $23.79;
  • computer and mathematical, $22.98;
  • architecture and engineering, $28.97; and
  • life, physical and social sciences, $26.55.
In the survey, one occupational group, sales and related, was singled out to show diversity of data available in the 22 major occupational categories. The Springfield MSA reported 22,040 sales and related jobs, making up 12.1 percent of the local work force. The average hourly rate for the occupational group was $14.76, below the national average of $17.69, the release said.[[In-content Ad]]
