Survey indicates assistants' role in manager productivity

You may want to thank your assistant for contributing to your success, according to a news release from OfficeTeam.

Executives polled in a recent nationwide survey were nearly unanimous (98 percent) in their belief that administrative assistants have an important role in increasing the efficiency of the managers they support, the release stated.

The survey was developed by OfficeTeam, a staffing service specializing in highly skilled temporary office and administrative professionals. It was conducted by an independent research firm and includes responses from 150 executives with the nation's 1,000 largest companies.

Executives were asked: "In your opinion, how important is an administrative assistant's role in increasing the productivity of his or her manager?"

Their responses:

Very important: 76 percent

Somewhat important: 22 percent

"Executives are delegating more substantive, long-term projects to their assistants, including Internet research, facilities administration, report preparation and staff supervision," said Diane Domeyer, executive director of OfficeTeam, in the release. "Consequently, administrative professionals are playing an even greater role in increasing both office productivity and that of their immediate supervisors."

Domeyer pointed out, however, that, "Managers need to acknowledge the efforts of their assistants by offering competitive salaries and challenging tasks that encourage continuous learning. The contributions made by office support professionals should be clearly recognized, particularly as high employment rates place heightened importance on staff retention."
