The U.S. Supreme Court voted 5-4 to reject protections for members of the Sackler family behind OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma.
Justices said the plan to shield members of the Sackler family from lawsuits does not have the consent of those who might sue, a tenet of bankruptcy law.
The Purdue Pharma bankruptcy settlement plan is now in limbo. The settlement sought to issue billions of dollars toward addressing the opioid crisis.
