Summits scheduled to address funding for state’s roads

Posted online
The Missouri Department of Transportation faces a looming budget crisis due to the repayment of construction bonds and decreasing revenue from state fuel taxes.

Two state groups are looking to spread the word and gather suggestions from the public on how to best handle the situation.

The Missouri General Assembly’s Joint Committee on Transportation Oversight is sponsoring a June 11 seminar, dubbed Moving Transportation Forward, at Jefferson City’s Capitol Plaza Hotel.

Several speakers are on the agenda for the meeting, including MoDOT Director Pete Rahn and Jack Basso of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.

The daylong meeting includes lunch and is free and open to the public, but registration is required; visit house.mo.gov for more information or to register.

Missouri Transportation Development Council is sponsoring its own series of summits across the state on the MoDOT funding issue.

The third and final summit in the series is set for 10 a.m. on Sept. 8 in the Plaster Student Union auditorium, on the Missouri State University campus. MSU and the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce will co-sponsor the event, which is scheduled to include chamber President Jim Anderson, who also is vice chairman of the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission; Sen. Bill Stouffer, R-Napton, who sponsored legislation creating a 1-cent sales tax to fund highway improvements; and David Stokes of the Show-Me Institute, who plans to speak about public-private partnerships.

The event is free and open to the public, and no registration is required.
