Summit prep school adds students, curricula

Posted online
The Summit Preparatory School of Southwest Missouri, after one year in operation, has increased its enrollment, added teachers and expanded to teach seventh and eighth grades.

The nonprofit, independent school, 922 W. Republic Road, began the 2006-2007 school year Aug. 21 with 96 students, a 50 percent increase from last year. To compensate, five new teachers have been hired.

Also this year, the school has added seventh and eighth grades; the Summit now teaches K-8.

Middle-school related programs have been created, including the Explorer’s Program to help students consider their career interests and develop leadership skills. Students will job-shadow local professionals every month and create a career portfolio outlining their interests and abilities.

The Summit also has a college-preparatory program for its students this year to hone organizational and leadership skills and strengthen curricula in science, mathematics and communication arts. Missouri State University and Drury University are collaborating with the school, as well; students have attended brown-bag lectures and science labs at the universities.

In addition to new teachers, the Summit has hired Josh Chastain as director of education.

Families interested in touring the school can attend two open houses, Aug. 27 and Sept. 12. For more information, call (417) 869-8077.[[In-content Ad]]
