Summit Prep expands available seats in first grade

The Summit Preparatory School is expanding the number of seats available in first grade for the 2026-27 year.

Founded in 2005, the private school at 202 E. Walnut Lawn St. has grown to more than 200 students from age 3 through grade 12.

The Board of Education approved the addition of a second first-grade classroom. Classes are capped at 18 students.

According to school officials, the expansion was approved due to increased demand from families. Parents can request tours this summer.

“The early elementary years are an important time for students to develop a love of learning and confidence in their abilities,” said Katie Heet, head of school, in a news release. “Expanding our first-grade program allows us to continue providing a highly personalized educational experience where students are known, challenged and supported as they grow academically, socially and emotionally.”

According to the school, the first-grade curriculum is designed to strengthen foundational academic skills while encouraging creativity, inquiry and independent thinking.

Students also participate in art, music, physical education, yoga, STEM, outdoor education and daily Spanish instruction.

These experiences encourage problem-solving, creativity, collaboration, physical wellness and cultural understanding.

Parents can request tours this summer. There are open houses at 9 a.m. July 14-16, and application fees are waived for participating families.
