Welcome to the Summer 2016 Project Report. Local architecture and engineering firms were invited to submit projects showcasing their work for this feature, which is published semiannually. From the $8 million Shepherd of the Hills Conservation Nature Center at the base of the Table Rock Dam to a $60 million hotel project in Indiana and the fifth and final building of Farmers Park, local architects and engineers are helping mold the national landscape. Below are 23 projects taking shape, such as the Queen City’s sixth Andy’s Frozen Custard and work on Missouri Southern State University’s Reynolds and Taylor halls.

NForm Architecture LLC
College of the Ozarks engineering building
100 Opportunity Ave., Point Lookout
College of the Ozarks is working with nForm Architecture LLC on a $1.9 million addition and renovation of the Point Lookout campus’ existing engineering building. The 8,800-square-foot expansion includes additional administrative and support spaces, classrooms and labs. The 7,700-square-foot renovation updates areas for metal fabrication, material testing, automation and woodshop operations. Project engineers are Tate Engineering Consultants, civil; Mettemeyer Engineering LLC, structural; and Smith-Goth Engineers Inc., mechanical, electrical and plumbing. The college will serve as its own general contractor on the project slated to be complete next summer.


Sapp Design Associates Architects PC
Farmers Park, Bldg. 5
2144 E. Republic Road
Sapp Design Associates Architects PC is designing developer Green Circle Projects LLC’s fifth and final building in Farmers Park. The 58,600-square-foot building keeps with Farmers Park’s commitment to serve as a prototype for sustainability in the region, and it’s designed to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design-Silver certification. With a mix of 2,000 square feet of ground-level retail and 42,350 square feet of multistory office space, Guaranty Bank already has committed to occupying 24,200 square feet. The project also includes a tiered circular parking garage on the west side of the building. General contractor Morelock-Ross Builders Inc. is working with engineers Toth & Associates Inc., structural; and Interpres Building Solutions Inc., mechanical, electrical and plumbing. The project should wrap by May 1.


Esterly, Schneider & Associates Inc.
Andy’s Frozen Custard
3830 S. Glenstone Ave.
Esterly, Schneider & Associates Inc. is designing Andy’s Frozen Custard’s sixth Springfield store. Expected to be complete this month, the nearly 2,000-square-foot project will feature three walk-up service windows and a drive-thru as part of Andy’s new signature design rolling out systemwide. General contractor Morelock-Ross Builders Inc. is working with engineers Anderson Engineering Inc., civil; Mettemeyer Engineering LLC, structural; Malone Finkle Eckhardt & Collins Inc., mechanical, electrical and plumbing.


Paragon Architecture LLC
Missouri Southern State University Reynolds Hall addition

Paragon Architecture LLC and Missouri Southern State University are collaborating on a $9 million addition to Reynolds Hall. The roughly 20,000 square feet of additional space will include lecture halls, classrooms, offices, labs and support spaces to allow for expansion of the science departments. Project engineers are Olsson Associates Inc., civil; Toth & Associates Inc., structural; and HERA Inc., laboratory facilities planners. The project is expected to be complete in December 2017.


H Design Group LLC
Bear Village Apartments, Phase V
Corner of Kimbrough Street and Grand Avenue
Developer Bryan Properties contracted with H Design Group on the fifth phase of its Bear Village Apartments. The 69,500-square-foot main phase of Bear Village, this corner will house 120 beds – studio, one, two and four bedroom options – and include an enclosed overpass and large plaza space for studying, socializing and bike storage. Project engineers are Pinnacle Design Consultants LLC, civil; Mettemeyer Engineering LLC, structural; and CJD Engineering Inc., mechanical, electrical and plumbing. The unit is expected to be complete in August 2017.


Hood-Rich Architecture
First Baptist Church expansion

Hood-Rich Architecture is designing a $1.5 million expansion for Bolivar’s First Baptist Church. The first-floor renovation and second-floor addition will include a new nursery, expanded gathering area and adult classroom spaces. Project engineers are Mettemeyer Engineering LLC, structural; and CJD Engineering Inc., mechanical, electrical and plumbing. The expansion should be complete next fall.


Butler, Rosenbury & Partners Inc.
DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel
601 Walnut St., Evansville, Ind.
Developer HCW Evansville Hotel LLC selected Butler, Rosenbury & Partners for its $60 million hotel project. Hunt Construction Group Inc. is general contractor on the five-story, 241-room hotel with 7,000 square feet of meeting space. The project also includes a six-level, 568-space parking garage and sky bridge that ties to the existing city-owned conference center and the Ford Center Arena.
Project engineers are Morley & Associates Inc., civil; PK Associates LLC, structural; and CJD Engineering Inc., mechanical, electrical and plumbing.


Insight Design Architects LLC
108 Park Central Square remodel
Insight Design Architects LLC is remodeling Kyle Cristoffer’s 108 Park Central Square space, the former home of Marilyn’s Fine Jewelry. The rehabilitation project will renovate the main floor to a white box interior in anticipation of a restaurant lease. The upper two floors will be renovated as Cristoffer’s personal apartment. Engineers are Miller Engineering Co., structural; Green Engineering Co., mechanical, electrical and plumbing. The remodel is expected to be complete in 2017.


Marshall-Waters-Woody and Associates Inc.
Mid-Missouri Bank
5419 S. Campbell Ave.
Marshall-Waters-Woody and Associates Inc. is designing a 5,200-square-foot banking center for Mid-Missouri Bank on the former site of Bair’s Grocery. With interior design from Buxton-Kubik-Dodd Creative, the bank will feature enhancements such as a community cafe, a financial and smart device engagement center, open meeting spaces and a community room. Engineers on the project are JS Smith Consulting Engineers PC, structural; Smith-Goth Engineers Inc., mechanical, electrical and plumbing; and Wilson Surveying Co. Inc., stormwater. The bank is expected to be complete this spring.


Dake Wells Architecture Inc.
Shepherd of the Hills Conservation Nature Center
Hatchery Road, Branson
The Missouri Department of Conservation and Dake Wells Architecture are designing a $8 million museum and entrance to the trout hatchery along Table Rock Dam. The 11,000-square-foot building replaces the existing entrance and includes public exhibit space with three large fresh water aquariums, classrooms, a presentation room and administrative offices. Project engineers are Mettemeyer Engineering LLC, structural; CJD Engineering Inc. and Columbus, Georgia-based Zachary Engineering, mechanical, electrical and plumbing; SWT Design Inc., landscape; and Denver-based Group 14 Engineering, energy performance consulting.

Resource Optimization & Innovation

Slone Architects Inc. is designing a new $10 million, 100,000-square-foot center where Mercy Springfield Communities supply management division Resource Optimization & Innovation will produce custom surgical packs. Developed by Rankin Development Co., the manufacturing center, slated to open next July, will include an office, production/packaging facility and warehouse. General contractor Morelock-Ross Builders Inc. is working with engineers Lee Engineering and Associates LLC, civil; Mettemeyer Engineering LLC, structural; and Interpres Building Solutions Inc., mechanical, electrical and plumbing.


Buxton Kubik Dodd Creative
R&O Office LLC
4045 E. Sunshine St.
Architect and interior designer Buxton Kubik Dodd Creative is collaborating with R&O LLC on a 20,500-square-foot office building on the Queen City’s east side. The future home of Ransin Injury Law, O’Reilly & Preston LLC and O’Reilly Hospitality Management LLC, the two-story building will blend with the scenery using natural colors, landscaping and stonework. It also will feature a green roof and solar panels. Project engineers are Lee Engineering & Associates LLC, civil; Miller Engineering Co., structural; Pellham-Phillips Architects and Engineers Inc., mechanical, electrical and plumbing. Construction is expected to be complete this spring.

Walker Retail
301-315 E. Chestnut St., Strafford
Slated for completion this winter, structural engineer Miller Engineering PC is working with owner On The Corner’s new retail space in Strafford. The project consists of two, single-story steel framed structures with a restaurant and spaces for four future tenants designed by Buxton Kubik Dodd Creative. Construct Design Build is general contractor, with additional engineering from Anderson Engineering Inc., civil; and Pellham-Phillips Architects and Engineers Inc., mechanical, electrical and plumbing.


CJD Engineering Inc.
Missouri Southern State University Reynolds Hall renovation
3950 E. Newman Road, Joplin
Mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineer CJD Engineering Inc. and Missouri Southern State University are collaborating on $3.8 million in first-floor renovations to Reynolds Hall. Approximately 22,000 square feet of floor area will be renovated into science labs, classrooms, computer labs, a lecture hall, offices and support spaces. Crossland Construction Co. is general contractor in the Paragon Architecture LLC-designed project. Additional project engineers are Olsson Associates Inc., civil; Toth & Associates Inc., structural; and HERA Inc., laboratory facilities planners. The project is expected to be complete next June.

Mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineer Interpres Building Solutions is working with Hogan, a St. Louis-based trucking transportation and logistics company, on a new commercial truck repair and office building.
Ireland Architects Inc. is handling design work with additional engineering from Heithaus Engineering & Associates Inc., civil; and J&M Engineering LLC, structural. With work from general contract Rich Kramer Construction, the building is slated for completion in the spring.


Malone Finkle Eckhardt & Collins Inc.
Missouri Southern State University Taylor Hall addition

Work continues at Missouri Southern State University with Malone Finkle Eckhardt & Collins Inc. on Taylor Hall. The project includes psychology classrooms, research labs and an administration suite totaling 23,000 square feet of new construction and 4,500 square feet of renovated space. The project also includes replacing all existing building HVAC systems with new chillers, boilers and pumps. General contractor J.E. Dunn Construction Co. is working with architect Paragon Architecture LLC and additional engineers Anderson Engineering Inc., civil; and J&M Engineering LLC, structural. The project is expected to be complete in December 2017.

Birch Pointe Health and Rehabilitation
3705 S. Jefferson Ave.
Arkansas-based owner Reliance Health Care Inc. and developer Miller Commerce are collaborated on a $10 million nursing facility dubbed Birch Pointe Health and Rehabilitation with mechanical and electrical engineer Conway Duncan Inc. The 68,000-square-foot center will include 120-bed skilled nursing, memory care and rehabilitation offering short- and long-term health care. Architect Bates & Associates Inc. is working with general contractor Larry Snyder & Co. Additional engineering is from Lee Engineering & Associates LLC, civil, and Pinnacle Design Consultants LLC, structural. The project is expected to be complete in September 2017.

Nashville, Tenn.
Owner/developer Bridgestone Firestone selected structural engineer Mettemeyer Engineering LLC for its $5 million Nashville, Tenn., office and training center. The four-story structure is expected to be complete in December 2017. Mike Hughes Architects is handling design work.


Toth & Associates Inc.
Weyerhaueser Substation
Dierks, Ark.
Toth & Associates Inc. designed the new Weyerhaeuser Substation for Rich Mountain Electric Cooperative near Dierks, Ark. The distribution substation serves both Rich Mountain customers and a large Weyerhaeuser saw mill. Toth & Associates Inc. is the electrical, civil and structural engineer for the project. Construction is scheduled for completion this fall.

Gold Medal Gyms
509 U.S. Highway 174, Republic
With an undisclosed loan from Bank of Bolivar, Gold Medal Gyms LLC selected Pinnacle Design Consultants LLC to design its new gymnastics training facility in Republic. General contractor Pyle Brothers Inc. is working with engineers David Bodeen, civil, and Ronald Hamme, structural. Buxton Kubik Dodd Creative is handling design work on the project slated for completion this month.


J&M Engineering LLC
Ballparks of America
1000 Pat Nash Drive, Branson
Construction continues on the $10.8 million Ballparks of America project in Branson. Structural engineer J&M Engineering is working with general contractor Killian Construction Co. on the little league tournament venue that incorporates five, two-thirds scale replica stadiums including Tiger, Busch, Wrigley, Ebbets and Fenway. Accommodating up to 46 teams, the venue designed by Paragon Architecture LLC includes a major-league style clubhouse, locker room and lounge. Other project engineers are Olsson Associates Inc., civil; and CJD Engineering Inc., mechanical, electrical and plumbing. The park should be complete next month.

Loren Cook Co. addition and renovation

Buxton Kubik Dodd Creative is handling engineering and interior design work on Loren Cook Co.’s single-story office addition to house its human resources and information technology departments. General contractor Morelock-Ross Builders Inc. is working with other project engineer Pellham-Phillips Architects and Engineers Inc., mechanical, electrical and plumbing. The project, designed by architect Buxton Kubik Dodd Creative, is expected to be complete this month.


CJW Transportation Consultants LLC
Webster County Justice Center renovation
101 S. Crittenden St., Marshfield
Webster County partnered with civil engineer CJW Transportation Consultants on a $16.4 million modernization of its justice center. HMN Architects Inc. is designing the project with additional engineering by Malone Finkle Eckhardt & Collins Inc., mechanical, electrical and plumbing. Amsinger Surveying Inc. provided the survey work for the project slated to be complete in winter 2019.
