Esterly, Schneider is the architect for the redevelopment of the former Wheeler’s Furniture building at the corner of Walnut and South streets in downtown Springfield for owners Morris and Debra Dock. Miller Engineering PC is the structural engineer, and Malone Finkle Eckhardt & Collins Inc. is the mechanical and electrical engineer for the building, which comprises a lower level, main floor and second and third floors. The second and third floors of the building will be converted into 12 loft apartments, with an atrium on the roof, and a patio that will overlook downtown. Square footage, number of bedrooms and amenities for the lofts will vary. Some units will have balconies on the south face of the building; others will have access to the historic elevator still in use. The first floor will be leased as retail space, but a private parking garage and storage space for residents will be added on the lower level. Completion is slated for early 2009.
