The students designed and constructed bridges of basswood members 3/32-by-3/32 of an inch to span a distance of approximately 1 foot.
At the contest, these are loaded to failure and judged on their efficiency, or the ratio of the weight that the bridge carried-to-the weight of the bridge.
This year there were 394 bridges entered in the contest representing 13 area high schools.
First place went to Travis Breese of Kickapoo High School whose 20.9-gram bridge carried a load of 118 pounds for an efficiency of 2,561.
Second place went to Eric Krause of Kickapoo High School whose 16-gram bridge carried a load of 67.8 pounds for an efficiency of 1,922.
Third place went to Naomi Mains, also of Kickapoo High School, with her 18.6-gram bridge supporting a load of 74 pounds for an efficiency of 1,805.
These three students were rewarded with cash prizes for their outstanding efforts.
The Springfield winners went on to compete in the 27th International Bridge Building Contest in Baltimore, Md.
