Dake|Wells Architecture is the architect and the interior designer for additions to and renovations of Stoutland R-II schools in Stoutland. Mettemeyer Engineering is the structural engineer, and Genesis Design Group is the mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineer. A general contractor has not yet been selected. Environmental Market Solutions Inc. is the sustainability consultant for the project, which will add 14,000 square feet to the school and remodel about 4,000 square feet of existing space, with little or no increase to the district’s annual energy costs. The project, which has an estimated cost of $2 million, is to be finished in December. New classrooms for science, art and music will be added to the high school, and a new commons area will connect the elementary and high schools, providing a new space for community events. Daylighting studies were used in the design of skylights and clerestory windows in the commons and classroom areas to reduce the need for electric light. Existing mechanical units will be replaced throughout the campus with more efficient units. Wood-clad administrative offices located at the new entrance establish a modern image for the school. Careful use of graphics and color elevate the interior above the usual institutional approach used in learning environments.
