Stock market 'fear index' rises to 2020 levels

The stock market "fear index" on Monday hit its highest level since March 2020.

Global stock markets were down on Monday, including a more than 1,000-point drop in the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

The CBOE Volatility Index, aka the VIX, is known as the "fear index" or "fear gauge" because it reflects investors’ anxieties about market downturns. The index is determined by calculating the weighted prices of put and call options in the S&P 500 index over the next 30 days.
