St. Louis Mayor Cara Spencer has discontinued a controversial building program that she targeted on the campaign trail.
The city's private building stabilization program had set aside $13 million for repairs of privately owned buildings, with repayment sought through liens. However, some building owners complained about large repair bills and the city inspector who oversaw the program was accused of corruption before resigning.
"This building stabilization program was well-intentioned but, unfortunately, very poorly executed," Spencer said in a statement to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
