A St. Louis-area steel mill is shutting down, leaving more than 250 people without jobs.
Alton Steel Inc. announced it would cease all operations this week at the Alton, Illinois, facility.
"This is an incredibly painful decision for everyone involved," said CEO Chris Ervin. "The steel industry has changed dramatically, and as a privately held company, we cannot access the capital required to compete with larger competitors that have newer facilities and modern equipment."
