Medical waste is any waste that can cause an infectious disease or that may harbor infectious human organisms. It also is known as red bag waste, infectious waste, biomedical waste and biohazardous waste.

Regulated medical waste includes single-use disposable items such as needles, syringes and gloves, as well as laboratory, surgical and emergency supplies that have contacted blood, bodily fluids, cultures or stocks of infectious agents.

Generators of medical waste include hospitals, nursing facilities, health clinics, veterinary clinics, schools, municipalities, EMTs, fire and police departments and motels.
